Worthington's houses are on their second or third roof.

In Worthington, the houses are older and the rules are stricter: in Old Worthington, a new roof needs the review board's approval before it needs a permit.

Most of Worthington was built after the war. The typical home went up in 1963, and more than half were built in the 1950s and '60s. More than 8 in 10 are older than 1980. A house that age has already had its first roof replaced, maybe twice, so what we find depends on how the last crew did it: whether they tore off or laid new shingles over old, and whether they replaced the flashing or reused it.

The trees that make those neighborhoods are part of it too. Big old trees drop branches on roofs and fill gutters, and the shade keeps moss and wet leaves on the shingles longer. On June 29, 2012, the derecho brought winds the National Weather Service estimated at 70 mph just west of Worthington and knocked down numerous trees on Northland and Proprietors roads.

Old Worthington is its own case. About 1 in 16 homes in the city was built before 1940, including the oldest houses in the original village around the Green. Worthington still has a good amount of slate in service, plus some wood shingle and clay tile roofs. Those are worth repairing, not replacing, and the city's design guidelines say the same.

  • If I had not seen my new shingles I wouldn’t have known they were actually here. I never saw the dumpster delivered or picked up. My property was just how I had left it that morning. I was very impressed. I highly recommend them!

  • When we saw water stains on our ceiling, we immediately called Richie Wilson and he was at our house within 24 hours to assess. He figured out the cause and it was successfully repaired quickly. His work was efficient and effective with absolutely no problems since. And, his prices were extremely fair. If you need a roofing company, go with Richie Wilson!

Is the inspection free in Worthington?

Yes. Inspections are free everywhere we work, Worthington included. We get on the roof and show you what we find.

I live in Old Worthington. Do I need approval for a new roof?

Yes, if you're in the Architectural Review District: the original village between North, South, Morning and Evening streets, plus High Street and Granville Road in the city. Worthington's design guidelines say you need a Certificate of Appropriateness from the Architectural Review Board before the city will issue a building permit for any exterior change there. We'll help you put the application together.

What will the review board want on my roof?

The city's guidelines ask owners to repair and keep slate and wood shingle roofs. When asphalt goes on a house that once had slate, they suggest a medium gray, or green, red or black to suit the house, and they say to avoid very light shingles and the uneven "staggered" styles made to look old. We'll bring samples that fit.

And outside the district?

Roofing still goes through the city's permit process, and Worthington asks for the manufacturer's product information with roofing and siding replacements. We pull the permit for you.
